The digital divide, SMS edition

I've had to tell fam: whenever a web site asks for your phone number, no matter what they say, they 100% are going to use that for SMS 2FA, DO NOT give them a landline number or you will be locked out forever.

First they forced everyone to get credit cards, then they forced everyone to get cell phones, just by denying service to anyone who didn't.

I've heard that a lot of sites like banks refuse to take Google Voice numbers, so I've been afraid to risk it for fear of locking up an account, but I wish I knew where I could get away with it.

@DaveFlater sometimes they even use and sell the phone numbers for ads https://techcrunch.com/2019/10/08/twitter-admits-it-used-two-factor-phone-numbers-and-emails-for-targeted-advertising/ OTP Authenticator codes are preferable
