The CDC is joking about mass infection, and still are not recommending masks. This is NOT how to do effective science communication.

Each year, respiratory viruses are
responsible for millions of illnesses and thousands of hospitalizations and deaths in the United States.
The good news is there are actions you can take to help protect yourself and others from health risks caused by respiratory viruses:
Keep yourself and your family up to date on routine vaccinations.
When sick, stay at home to prevent the spread of illness.
Wash your hands at key times, like before eating and after using the restroom.
Seek health care right away for testing or treatment if you think you might be getting sick. Treatment for #COVID19 and #flu can lessen symptoms and shorten the time you are sick.

It's outrageous that the CDC is using a Black person to represent viruses in this meme.

Memes can be effective tools in science communication, but only when they are inclusive and empowering, not when they stigmatize or make fun of a harmful situation. This is not acceptable, @cdcgov!

@luckytran this actually is quite an effective meme. No schoolkid and most parents arent going to share an infographic about back to school disease upticks but this meme will be shared - you can see this by comparing this post to other posts on the Instagram. And your gripe about the meme depicting a black man is also silly, you seem to only view people only through the lens of race when race has nothing to do with the context.
